Research and Network Link

IUA

The Irish Universities Association (IUA) is the representative voice of Ireland's research intensive, enterprise engaged, public universities.

  • At the IUA in 2016 StudentVolunteer.ie first launched its innovative platform across Irish higher education for students to connect with the non-profit sector for student learning.
  • The IUA historically hosted and developed the civic engagement agenda, championing the Campus Engage network as a mechanism for university-community engagement.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The RPL in Higher Education Project

Realising the Potential of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Lifelong Learning Opportunities Project, which commenced in 2020, is funded by the Human Capital Initiative (HCI) and co-sponsored by the Irish Universities Association (IUA) and the Technological Universities Association (TUA). The project has worked collaboratively with 14 partner Higher Education institutions and other key stakeholders to develop and promote RPL practices across the sector.

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an important mechanism to support student's transferable skills and knowledge.
  • Student volunteering develops transferable skills —leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, intercultural competence—that align with graduate attributes.
  • RPL frameworks allow these skills to be formally recognised for academic credit or progression, making volunteering visible and valued in higher education.
  • StudentVolunteer.ie can provide verified volunteering records and digital badges, reducing barriers for learners who gain skills outside formal classrooms.

Student Success

Recognition of Prior Learning and Student Volunteering

What is  Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

RPL is an important higher education policy and practice that aligns to StudentVolunteer.ie.

How is RPL and Student Volunteering linked?

Volunteering builds real skills and learning such as teamwork, leadership, planning, communication, training and more. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a way higher education institutions can recognise learning you’ve gained outside the classroom (including through volunteering) to support entry, advanced entry, or exemptions, depending on the institution and programme.

If you volunteer through a participating university programme, StudentVolunteer.ie can help you log your activity, build your volunteering portfolio, and (in many cases) access a certificate/record of your experience which is useful when you’re gathering evidence for an RPL conversation.
