About Us:To be a Buddy to an ATU student with intellectual disabilities
What is Project WAVE?
ATU Project WAVE (Working towards Academic and Vocational Equity) is a two-year project which provides individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to attend college and undertake a comprehensive programme, which addresses students’ social, academic, and vocational needs.
What is a Peer Buddy?
A peer buddy is a student on campus, who can be a role-model who provides friendship, tips about socialising, insights into student life at ATU, and connections to others.
A peer buddy is paired up with one student from Project WAVE.
The buddy and WAVE student work collaboratively to get to know each other and learn from each other.
How much time will buddying take?
A minimum of one hour a week. The WAVE students are on campus Monday to Thursday, 9.30 to 3.30. The buddying would generally happen within these hours. The times and days can be organised directly with your WAVE Buddy, who may have some flexibility outside of these hours. For example, some WAVE students stay later on campus whilst waiting for a lift or bus home.
Where will the buddying happen?
Anywhere on campus! You and your WAVE buddy decide together when and where to meet (e.g. canteen, Student Centre, library, etc.). For example, you might decide to meet up for lunch for one day at the canteen or meet for a coffee break another day. Or meet at the Breakfast Club one morning or play pool in the Student Centre for half an hour another day.
What do I do with the WAVE Buddy?
Anything! You and your WAVE buddy can decide together what you would both like to do. Chat, drink coffee, study sessions, play pool, go for a walk, bring the WAVE buddy to meet your friends!
